Early Life and Military Career
Count Steinheil, a Baltic German nobleman, was born to a retired lieutenant in Estonia.He received his education at home and was enlisted as a quartermaster in the General Staff on October 8, 1776.
Service in the Russo-Swedish War
During the Russo-Swedish War of 1788, Steinheil was assigned to the front and promoted to Ober-Quartermaster with the rank of Premier-Major.He distinguished himself in several battles and was awarded the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1789.
Higher Commands and Responsibilities
In 1792, Steinheil assisted Generalissimo Suvorov in establishing field fortifications along the Swedish border in Finland.He was promoted to Colonel in 1797 and Major General in 1798 for his topographical survey of the Vyborg Governorate. In 1800, he became head of the Map Depot of the Quartermaster's Department.
General-Quartermaster in Prussia
From 1806 to 1807, Steinheil served as General-Quartermaster of General-Field Marshal Kamensky's army in Prussia.He was wounded during the Battle of Friedland in 1807 and awarded the Order of St. George 3rd Class for his valor at the Battle of Preussisch Eylau.
Governor-General of Finland
In 1810, Steinheil was appointed Governor-General of Finland and commander of Russian troops in the region.He was elevated to the rank of Count in 1812 for his distinguished service.
Napoleonic Wars
During Napoleon's invasion of Russia, Steinheil's command fought in the battles of Ekau, Bauska, Polotsk, and on the Berezina River.He received the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky for defeating General Wrede's Bavarian Corps at Kubluch.
Later Career and Death
After the war, Steinheil returned to his duties as Governor-General of Finland.He was promoted to General of Infantry in 1819 and retired from his governorship in 1823.
Count Steinheil passed away on March 7, 1831, in Helsingfors (present-day Helsinki), leaving a legacy of military and administrative service.
