Vladimir Yudin: Politician and Labor Unionist

Vladimir Yudin is a Russian politician and former chairman of the trade union at the Kirov Plant in Saint Petersburg. He is known for his role in the 1996 Saint Petersburg gubernatorial election and his involvement in "oligarchic" property disputes.

Political Career

Prior to becoming a member of parliament, Yudin gained notoriety in 1996 when he directed an inquiry to the General Prosecutor's Office regarding the alleged involvement of gubernatorial candidate Anatoly Sobchak in criminal investigations in Saint Petersburg. He claimed that the citizens deserved to elect an honest and incorruptible leader. The prosecutor's office confirmed that Sobchak was indeed involved in certain "housing issues."

Using this information, Yudin compiled a pamphlet with the prosecutor's response and distributed it throughout the city three days before the election. As a result, Sobchak lost his position, along with his first deputy, Vladimir Putin.

Controversy and Influence

After becoming a member of the State Duma in 2001, Yudin became involved in property disputes between Russian oligarchs. In 2002, he sided with Oleg Deripaska in a conflict over the Kotlas Pulp and Paper Mill. He sent inquiries to the governor of the Arkhangelsk region, requesting him to mediate the dispute between Deripaska's Basic Element and the Ilim Pulp holding.

Yudin also actively advocated for the interests of brewery companies when their enemies attempted to severely restrict advertising for their products.
