Farhad Karimov: Renowned War Reporter
Born in Moscow on December 11, 1948, Farhad Karimov became an acclaimed Azerbaijani journalist known for his courageous reporting from conflict zones.
Education and Early Career
Karimov graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at Azerbaijan State University in 1973. After working at the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, he embarked on a career in journalism.
Journalistic Contributions
From 1987 onwards, Karimov immersed himself in journalism. He initially worked as a reporter for the newspaper "Molodyozh Azerbaijana." In 1991, he joined the Information Agency "Turan" as an editor in its information department.
Karimov collaborated with Reuters and Associated Press in 1992 and produced video reports on the Nagorno-Karabakh War. He went on to cover conflicts in Georgia and Tajikistan.
Reporting on the Chechnya Conflict
Karimov gained international recognition for his intrepid reporting from Chechnya. He captured the horrors of the Chechen War, documenting Russian artillery barrages and the winter offensive of 1994/95. His work played a pivotal role in changing global perceptions of the conflict.
Tragic Death
On May 21, 1995, while reporting alongside Chechen rebels, Karimov was fatally shot in a forest area. His body was discovered the following day by a local. Despite being identified by his brother, Karimov's body was only returned to Azerbaijan three years later.
Legacy
Karimov was posthumously awarded the Rory Peck Award in 1995, becoming the first recipient of the prestigious journalism prize. His name and work are inscribed on a memorial plaque at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. Karimov's bravery and dedication to reporting on war remain an inspiration to journalists worldwide.
