Biography of Ivica Račan
Ivica Račan, born in 1944 in Ebersbach, Germany, is a Croatian politician who served as the Prime Minister of Croatia. He graduated from the University of Zagreb, where he studied law. Račan played a significant role in the political landscape of Croatia, particularly during the dissolution of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s and the subsequent war with Serbia.
Račan began his political career as the leader of the League of Communists of Croatia (SKH), which later transformed into the Social Democratic Party (SDP) after the dissolution of the communist regime. However, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), led by Franjo Tuđman, emerged victorious in the first elections held in independent Croatia. Tuđman's presidency was marked by a policy of dictatorship and autocracy until his death in December 1999.
In January, shortly before his birthday on February 24th, Ivica Račan received the "gift" of becoming the Prime Minister of Croatia. His Social Democratic Party formed a coalition with the liberals and emerged as the winner of the parliamentary elections held on January 3rd.
During his tenure as Prime Minister, Račan emphasized the importance of revitalizing the economy. He pledged to reduce taxes, provide incentives for investors, and address the issue of unemployment. Additionally, he advocated for limiting the powers of the president and transforming Croatia into a parliamentary republic. In terms of foreign policy, Račan's primary goal was to end the country's international isolation.
