Early Life and Education
Fyodor Timofeyevich Afanasyev was born into a peasant family in the Soviet Union. Of Chuvash ethnicity, he completed eight grades of primary education before enrolling in a factory-vocational училище.
Military Service
In March 1942, Afanasyev joined the Red Army and graduated from the Kuibyshev Infantry School. He was deployed to the front in the midst of the Great Patriotic War.
Heroism at the Western Dvina
In March 1944, Guard Lieutenant Afanasyev became the commander of a company in the 201st Guards Rifle Regiment (67th Guards Rifle Division). On June 22, 1944, the division launched an offensive.
Afanasyev's company spearheaded the assault, breaking into enemy trenches and neutralizing over twenty soldiers. They held their ground for two days, repelling fifteen counterattacks.
Crossing the River
Continuing its advance, the company reached the Western Dvina River and swiftly crossed using makeshift rafts. They seized a foothold on the western bank, capturing the first line of enemy trenches.
Ultimate Sacrifice
During the battle to expand the bridgehead, Fyodor Afanasyev made the ultimate sacrifice. He was killed in action and laid to rest northwest of the village of Tropina in the Shuya District of Belarus.
Posthumous Honors
Afasyev was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union for his "heroism, courage, and skillful leadership during the crossing of the Western Dvina and the expansion of the bridgehead." A museum dedicated to his memory was established in his former school.
