Born on September 22, 1967, in San Vicente, Cuba, Felix Savón rose to become one of the most esteemed amateur boxers of all time.

Humble Beginnings and Early Success

From a young age, Savón displayed exceptional athleticism and discipline. He excelled in various sports, including swimming, baseball, football, and even chess. His boxing career began in 1980 when he was accepted into a sports academy. With his impressive physique and powerful punches, he quickly gained recognition.

Savón's first major victory came in 1985 when he won the Cuban National Heavyweight Championship. In 1987, he defeated five-time U.S. Amateur Champion Michael Bentt on his way to claiming the Pan American Games title. He continued to dominate the Cuban National Championships in the heavyweight division, winning every year from 1985 to 2000, except for two defeats in 1999 and 2000.

On the international stage, Savón won six World Championships in the heavyweight division. Notably, he earned a medal at the 1997 World Championships after the disqualification of his opponent, Ruslan Chagaev, for engaging in professional fights prior to the tournament.

Olympic Glory and Retirement

Savón achieved the rare feat of winning three consecutive Olympic gold medals in the heavyweight division at the 1992, 1996, and 2000 Olympic Games, joining the ranks of Laszlo Papp and Teofilo Stevenson as the only boxers to accomplish this.

Contrary to popular belief, British promoters did not request that Savón fight Mike Tyson. It was American promoters who attempted to arrange the match, but Savón repeatedly declined the lucrative offers, stating his opposition to "imperialism."
