Early Life and Career
Ferenc Nagy was born on October 8, 1903, in Bisse, Hungary. Following World War I, he supported himself as a journalist specializing in agricultural issues and joined the Peasant People's Party.
Founding of the Independent Smallholders Party
During the economic depression that swept Hungary after 1929, Nagy left the Peasant People's Party and co-founded the Independent Smallholders Party with Zoltán Tildy. Despite government opposition, the party gradually gained strength in parliament.
Political Imprisonment and Post-War Leadership
Nagy was elected to parliament in 1939 and arrested by the Nazis in 1944. After the war, he became chairman of the Smallholders Party. In the newly established Hungarian Republic, Nagy served as Minister of Reconstruction, Speaker of the National Assembly in late 1945, and Prime Minister in February 1946.
Exile and Death
In 1947, while visiting Switzerland, Nagy was informed that he was no longer welcome in Hungary and emigrated to the United States. He died in Fairfax, Virginia, on June 12, 1979.
