Early Career and Debut
Fernando De Napoli began his footballing journey as a product of Avellino's academy. He made his professional debut while on loan to Serie C club Rimini in 1982. After returning to Avellino in December 1983, De Napoli debuted for the club's first team in February 1984 against Ascoli.
For three seasons, De Napoli played for Avellino, which maintained a mid-table position in Serie A, avoiding relegation and failing to qualify for European competitions. During this time, he became a key figure in Italy's youth team and earned his first call-up to the senior national team in 1986.
World Cup Debut and Rise to Prominence
De Napoli made his Italy debut against China in May 1986 and was included in the squad for the 1986 FIFA World Cup. He played in four matches, including Italy's 0-2 defeat to France in the Round of 16.
Following the World Cup, leading Italian clubs, including Juventus, Milan, and Napoli, pursued De Napoli. He ultimately opted for Napoli, the club he had supported since childhood and which boasted the legendary Diego Maradona.
Napoli Success and International Triumphs
In his first season with Napoli, De Napoli won his first Serie A title, which he repeated in 1990. He also lifted the Coppa Italia, Italian Super Cup, and UEFA Cup, becoming an icon alongside Maradona, Careca, and Gianfranco Zola during the club's most successful era.
Internationally, De Napoli remained a regular in Italy's squad, featuring in Euro 1988, where Italy fell to the USSR in the semifinals, and the 1990 World Cup, where Argentina eliminated Italy once again in the semifinals.
Transfer to Milan and Later Career
In a controversial move in 1992, De Napoli joined Milan for a lucrative contract, earning the wrath of Napoli fans who accused him of greed. Despite winning two Serie A titles and two Italian Super Cups, De Napoli struggled to make an impact at Milan, appearing in only 17 matches.
He ended his playing career at Reggiana, serving as general manager after retiring in 1997.
