Early Life
Valeriy Garkalin was a Russian and Soviet actor, poet, prose writer, and member of the Union of Writers of Russia, the Guild of Cinema Actors of Russia, and the Pomory Association in Moscow. Born into a family with a complex past, he was raised by his grandmother.
Artistic Education
Garkalin's path to the arts began at the Moscow Art Theatre School (MXAT). After 2.5 years of study, he left the program and briefly enrolled in the directing department of the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK). However, he ultimately left that institution as well.
Theater and Career
Undeterred, Garkalin embarked on a career in theater, performing in various productions and giving concert recitals. He also found success on the screen, making his film debut in 1963. Throughout his career, he appeared in over 50 films, including notable roles in "The Flight of the Falcon" (1973) and "The Ballad of the Noble Thief" (1975).
Family Life
Garkalin was married twice. His first wife, Tatiana Larina, was an artist, and they had a daughter together. His second wife, Galina, was a doctor. After nearly 40 years of marriage, the couple divorced.
Legacy
Valeriy Garkalin passed away on May 31, 2021, less than two months before his 80th birthday. He left behind a rich legacy as a gifted actor, writer, and artist who left an indelible mark on Russian culture.
