Biography of Finidi George
Early Life and CareerFinidi George, a former Nigerian footballer, was born in the city of Port Harcourt in Rivers State, Nigeria. He began his football career in the club "Calabar Rovers" in 1989.
Success at Ajax
In 1993, Finidi moved to the Dutch club "Ajax". With Ajax, George became a three-time champion of the Netherlands and won all European club cups in 1995, including the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and Intercontinental Cup. Known as one of the fastest players in the team, Finidi played as a right or left midfielder for Ajax, scoring 18 goals in 85 matches.
Time at Real Betis
In 1996, Finidi transferred to the Spanish club "Real Betis" where he quickly became a fan favorite. In his first season with Betis, he played 36 matches and scored 10 goals. The team finished 4th in the 1996/1997 season and qualified for the UEFA Cup. Betis reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in the 1997/1998 season but was defeated by Chelsea. In subsequent seasons, Betis struggled in the Spanish league, and in Finidi's last season with the team, they were relegated to the second division. Finidi played a total of 130 matches for Betis, scoring 38 goals.
Move to Mallorca and Ipswich Town
In 2000, Finidi signed a contract with "Mallorca" in Spain. The team finished third in the 2000/2001 season and qualified for the UEFA Champions League. Finidi played in almost all the matches, scoring 5 goals in 31 games. In 2001, he unexpectedly moved to the English club "Ipswich Town" for a transfer fee of $5.4 million. Ipswich Town signed Finidi to strengthen their squad for the UEFA Cup. Finidi played in the UEFA Cup, scoring a goal against Torpedo Moscow and helping Ipswich Town advance. However, the team was eventually eliminated by Inter Milan.
Later Career and Retirement
Finidi played 25 matches and scored 6 goals for Ipswich Town in the 2001/2002 season, but the team was relegated from the Premier League. In the following season, he played for Ipswich Town in the first division, but due to legal issues, he left the club and was unable to play for six months. After being without a club for six months, Finidi went on a trial with his former club "Mallorca" and signed a contract in January 2004. He played 14 matches for Mallorca before deciding to retire in 2004.
National Team Career
Finidi made his debut for the Nigerian national team in 1992 and won the bronze medal at the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations. In 1994, he was part of the Nigerian team that won the Africa Cup of Nations, defeating Zambia in the final. Finidi represented Nigeria in two FIFA World Cups in 1994 and 1998, playing a total of 8 matches. He won his last trophy with the national team at the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations, finishing in third place.
Personal Life
Finidi George is one of 12 children in the George family. His younger brother, Ighivanare, tragically passed away during a crowd incident after a match against a team from Western Nigeria.
