Francesco Barsanti: Virtuoso and Composer

Francesco Barsanti (1690-1772) was an Italian musician who, like many of his countrymen, traveled throughout Europe during the 18th century. Born in Lucca, Barsanti was surrounded by talented musicians, including Giuseppe Francesco Guami, Niccolò Paganini, and Luigi Boccherini.

Early Years and Influences

In his youth, Barsanti studied science in Padua but soon abandoned it for music. He became proficient in both the flute and oboe and made significant contributions to the development of instrumental music, particularly in the genres of sonata, concerto, and symphony. In 1717 and 1718, he played the oboe at the annual liturgical services at Santa Croce in Lucca, earning a considerable salary.

Travels and Connections

In 1735, after spending many years in London, Barsanti traveled to Scotland, where he married a Scottish woman. There, he enjoyed the patronage of the aristocracy, which enabled him to publish his most famous works: 10 concertos (Op. 3) in 1742 and 9 overtures (Op. 4) around 1743. Upon his return to London, he lost his previous contracts and became a violist in the orchestras of London theaters.

Versatile Musician

Barsanti's ability to play various instruments was remarkable. In Lucca, musicians were accustomed to switching between the flute and oboe, and Barsanti was no exception. He later became an accomplished violist and even played the timpani, which he later sold to fund his return journey to London.

Legacy and Significance

Despite being a self-taught musician, Barsanti's compositions showcase his exceptional talent. His sonatas for solo flute, symphonic concertos for various instruments, and overtures featuring the viola in innovative ways are testaments to his versatility and creativity. Although his personal life ended in poverty, Barsanti's musical legacy continues to inspire musicians today.
