Francisco Bru, the Trailblazing Spanish Football Legend
Early Career: Barcelona's TriumphsFrancisco Bru's footballing journey began at the legendary FC Barcelona, where he made history as a player in one of the first-ever football matches in Spain on May 30, 1904. As a pivotal member of the team, Bru played a significant role in Barcelona's remarkable hat-trick of Campeonato de Cataluña titles from 1909 to 1911 and their Copa del Rey triumph in 1910.
During his tenure with Barça, Bru also received at least five caps for the Catalonia national team, although incomplete record-keeping at the time suggests he may have earned even more.
Transition to Refereeing: The Pistol-Packing Enforcer
Upon retiring as a player, Bru embarked on a new chapter as a football referee. According to popular lore, he entered the dressing room before his first match with a pistol in his bag. In a dramatic gesture, he placed the weapon on the table in full view and tucked it into his shorts to "ensure a peaceful game."
Bru's reputation as a strict and impartial referee earned him recognition. He notably officiated two Copa del Rey finals: in 1916, when Athletic Bilbao defeated Real Madrid 4-0, and in 1917, when Real Madrid emerged victorious against Arenas Club. That same year, he also refereed a match between the Catalonia and Castile regional teams.
Coaching the Spanish National Team: Olympic Silver and Controversy
In 1920, Bru was appointed to a three-man selection committee for the Spanish national team competing in the 1920 Olympics. However, he soon became the sole coach after rejecting several Basque players proposed by the committee. Spain ultimately finished with a silver medal, but the tournament was marred by controversy when Czechoslovakia walked off the field during the final in protest against the refereeing.
Despite the farcical circumstances, Spain's quarterfinal victory against the Netherlands secured them a place in the consolation tournament, where they emerged victorious to claim the silver medal.
Two Stints with Real Madrid and the Mediterranean League
Bru also had two stints as coach of the prestigious Real Madrid, then known simply as Madrid. He led the team to two Copa del Rey victories and returned after the Spanish Civil War to coach the Girona FC in the Mediterranean League, which operated during the conflict.
