Birth and Early Life

Ferdinand Philip Mayer-Horckel, known professionally as Ferdy Mayne, was born on March 11, 1916, in Mainz, Germany. His father was a judge, and his mother, who was half-English, was a singing teacher. Due to their Jewish heritage, Mayne was sent to England as a teenager in 1933, where he lived with his aunt, Lee Hutchinson, a photographer and sculptor. His parents were sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp, but they were fortunate enough to escape to England before the outbreak of World War II.

WWII and MI-5

During the war, Mayne worked as an informer for MI-5, Britain's counterintelligence agency, due to his German language skills. According to Joan Miller, a former MI-5 officer, Mayne was a valuable asset to the organization. Mayne was also a witness at Miller's wedding in 1945.

Marriage and Family

In 1950, Mayne married actress Deirdre de Peyer. They had one daughter, Belinda Mayne, who also became an actress. Their daughter was named after the musical "Belinda Fair," which is where Mayne and de Peyer first met. Mayne and de Peyer divorced in 1976.

Film and Television Career

Mayne made his film debut in a small role in the 1943 comedy "Old Mother Riley Overseas." His roles gradually became more substantial, and in the early 1950s, he gained recognition for his work in both film and television. Mayne often played German characters, including professors, officers, ambassadors, and aristocrats.

International Breakthrough

In 1967, Mayne gained worldwide popularity for his role as the villainous vampire Count von Krolock in Roman Polanski's horror-comedy "The Fearless Vampire Killers." He also appeared in numerous American films, including "Conan the Destroyer" (1984), "Revenge of the Pink Panther" (1977), and "The Hit Man" (1991).

Parkinson's Disease and Later Life

In the 1990s, Mayne was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. He passed away due to complications from the disease on January 30, 1998, in London, at the age of 81. His last film role was in the 1995 drama "The Killers Within."
