Friedrich Ohmann
Early Life and EducationFriedrich Ohmann was an Austrian architect born in Vienna, Austria. He studied architecture under the guidance of Heinrich von Ferstel and Karl König at the Vienna University of Technology. Ohmann later continued his education at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, where he studied under Friedrich von Schmidt.
Professional Career
Professor and Bridge InspectorFrom 1889 to 1899, Ohmann served as a professor of decorative architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts, Architecture, and Design in Prague. Additionally, he collaborated with Josef Hackhofer as an inspector for all bridges along the Vienna River, commencing in 1898.
New Palace Burg Hofburg
In 1899, Ohmann was entrusted with the construction of the Neue Burg Palace within the Hofburg palace complex. The construction of this monumental project spanned from 1899 to 1907.
Academy of Fine Arts Vienna
In 1904, Ohmann assumed leadership of the architecture master class at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, where he remained until the end of his career.
Architectural Style
Jugendstil InfluencesDuring his time in Prague, Ohmann embraced the moderate modernist style of Jugendstil. Examples of his Jugendstil designs include the Glass House in Vienna's Belvedere Park.
Neo-Baroque Preference
However, in his later works, Ohmann exhibited a preference for a more ornate neo-Baroque style. His designs often incorporated elements of both Jugendstil and neo-Baroque, such as his work on the Neue Burg Palace.
