Early Life and Education
George Cadogan Gardner McKay was born on June 10, 1932, in New York City to advertising executive Deane McKay and his wife, Catherine. He grew up between New York and Paris, studying art at Cornell University for two years before dropping out upon his father's passing.
From Sculpture to Acting
After a brief stint in advertising, McKay pursued sculpting, exhibiting his work in private galleries and the Museum of Modern Art. In 1957, he transitioned to acting, appearing in minor film and television roles and quickly becoming a Hollywood heartthrob.
'Adventures in Paradise' and Instant Fame
In 1959, Gardner McKay was cast in the lead role of Adam Troy in "Adventures in Paradise." The series, based on James Michener's novels, chronicled the adventures of a Navy veteran who sailed the South Pacific in his schooner, the "Tiki." The show became an instant hit, with McKay's handsome physique and charismatic performance capturing the hearts of viewers.
Post-Acting Career
After the end of "Adventures in Paradise," McKay retired from acting, appearing in only two more films, "The Pleasure Seekers" (1964) and "I Sailed to Tahiti with an All Girl Crew" (1968). He dedicated himself to photography, sculpture, and world travel, pursuing extreme sports with vigor.
Literary Success
McKay's adventurous spirit and life experiences fueled his writing career. He became a successful playwright and literary critic, writing for "The Los Angeles Herald Examiner" and teaching writing at various universities. He received numerous literary awards, including three National Endowment for the Arts grants for playwriting and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play.
Personal Life and Legacy
In 1980, Gardner McKay met artist Madeleine Madigan. They married in 1983, and Madigan remained by his side until his death from prostate cancer on November 21, 2001, at the age of 69. Gardner McKay is remembered as a talented actor, artist, and writer who lived life to the fullest and left a lasting legacy through his work.
