Hibernian Breakthrough
After being released by Newcastle, Caldwell joined Hibernian on a short-term deal in 2004. He impressed during his time at Easter Road, reaching the Scottish League Cup final that year. Despite interest from Dutch club Vitesse, Caldwell ultimately signed a two-year contract with Hibernian.
Celtic Controversy
In 2006, Caldwell signed a pre-contract agreement with fierce rivals Celtic, sparking widespread discontent among Hibernian fans. He became a target of jeers and whistles in his final match for the club. Celtic manager Gordon Strachan confirmed the transfer a week later.
Title Wins and Cult Status at Celtic
Caldwell joined Celtic in the summer of 2006 and went on to help the club win two league titles, the Scottish Cup, and the Scottish League Cup. Initially criticized by some Celtic supporters, he gradually won them over with his committed performances. Notably, his collision with Kilmarnock's David Fernandez resulted in a serious injury for the Spaniard, but Caldwell later apologized and displayed remorse.
Player of the Year and Contract Dispute
Caldwell was named Celtic's Player of the Year for the 2008/09 season. However, contract negotiations stalled during the first half of the 2009/10 campaign. Caldwell criticized the club's offer, suggesting that he would not accept their terms. This led to speculation about his departure.
Final Days at Celtic and Transfer Speculation
Gordon Strachan, who had previously managed Caldwell at Celtic, attempted to sign him for Middlesbrough. However, only Barry Robson made the move from Glasgow to Teesside. Caldwell's final appearance for Celtic came in the Old Firm derby against Rangers on January 3, 2010, where he was responsible for the goal that allowed Lee McCulloch to equalize.
