Biography of Hasan Mammad Baghir oglu Abdullayev

Hasan Mammad Baghir oglu Abdullayev was a prominent Azerbaijani physicist, academician, and member-correspondent of the USSR Academy of Sciences. He was born on August 20, 1918, in the village of Yaydji, near Julfa (now in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic).

Early Life and Education

Abdullayev completed his studies at the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical Institute's Physics Faculty in 1941. From 1941 to 1944, he taught at the Ordubad Pedagogical School. In 1945, he started working at the Institute of Physics and Mathematics of the Azerbaijan SSR Academy of Sciences, where he served as the director from 1957 to 1958. In 1959, he joined the Institute of Physics of the Azerbaijan SSR Academy of Sciences and became its director from 1959 to 1968. From 1968 to 1970, he held the position of Academic Secretary of the Department of Physical-Technical and Mathematical Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR Academy of Sciences.

Contributions to Semiconductor Physics

Abdullayev dedicated more than fifty years of his life to the study of semiconductor physics. He made significant contributions to the field by discovering new groups of double and triple compounds of selenium and tellurium. He proposed diodes with controllable electrical memory and obtained complex semiconductors used as receivers in the visible and infrared spectra. His research on selenium and selenium devices provided explanations for anomalous phenomena in selenium and indicated ways to control its properties. He conducted extensive work on obtaining monocrystals of complex chemical composition for lasers and memory elements. Abdullayev also developed new semiconductor materials for thermoelectric converters. He authored over 150 scientific papers, with more than 50 published abroad. He held patents for over 30 inventions, some of which were registered in the United States, France, and Russia. Abdullayev delivered lecture series on semiconductor physics and selenium in Russia, the United States, and Turkey.

Teaching and Academic Career

In 1956, Abdullayev founded the Department of Semiconductor Physics at the Azerbaijan State University (ASU) and mentored numerous students throughout his career.

Political Career and Honors

Hasan Mammad Baghir oglu Abdullayev was elected multiple times as a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He received various orders and medals for his contributions to science. Abdullayev passed away in 1993 in Baku.
