Childhood and Education
Gediminas Kirkilas was born in Vilnius, Lithuania, on January 18, 1951, to a large family with two brothers and four sisters. His parents were a communications engineer and a teacher. After graduating from high school in 1969, he served in the Northern Fleet from 1969 to 1972.
Upon returning from the military, Kirkilas worked as an interior restorer for the Monument Restoration Trust from 1972 to 1978. Simultaneously, he pursued an evening degree in history from the Vilnius Pedagogical Institute (now Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences) from 1974 onward.
Political Career
Kirkilas began his political career in 1982 as an instructor for the Leninist District Committee of the Communist Party of Lithuania. He later became an instructor for the Culture Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Lithuania from 1986 to 1990.
With the reestablishment of Lithuanian independence, Kirkilas emerged as a key figure in the Democratic Labour Party of Lithuania (LDDP). He served as its deputy chairman from 1990 to 1996, briefly acting as chairman in 1993. From 1996 to 2001, he served as a member of the LDDP's presidium.
In 2001, Kirkilas joined the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP) and became its deputy chairman. He was elected to the Lithuanian Parliament (Seimas) in 1992 and served continuously until 2016. He held various leadership positions within the Parliament, including Chairman of the National Security Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee.
Prime Ministership
On July 18, 2006, Kirkilas was appointed Prime Minister of Lithuania. He led a Social Democratic government until 2008. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in drafting Lithuania's national security concept and oversaw the country's accession to the eurozone.
Later Life
After stepping down as Prime Minister, Kirkilas remained active in politics, founding the Social Democratic Labour Party of Lithuania in 2018. He passed away on April 20, 2024, at the age of 72.
Personal Life
Gediminas Kirkilas was married to Lyudmila, who worked as a secretary for the Lithuanian Railways company. They had two children: a son, Rolandas, and a daughter, Diana.
