Early Life and Education
Gagik Melkonyan was born in Leninakan, Armenia, in the former Soviet Union. He graduated from the Leninakan branch of the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute in 1984, earning a degree in engineering technology.
Military Service and Career in Construction
From 1975 to 1977, Melkonyan served in the Soviet Army. Upon completing his military service, he joined the Oktemberyan Construction Materials Plant in Armavir as a laborer. He rose through the ranks, serving as an accountant, quarry manager, deputy director, director, and finally chairman of the board.
Political Career
Melkonyan entered the political arena in 1999, when he was elected to the National Assembly of Armenia. He joined the "Unity" parliamentary faction and served on the Standing Committee on Defense, National Security, and Internal Affairs. In 2003, he became a member of the permanent commission on the same committee. Melkonyan remained a member of parliament until 2003.
