Gennadiy Pinigin

Born to a family of civil servants, Yuriy Pinigin pursued his passion for astronomy from a young age. In 1965, he graduated from Tomsk University with a degree in astronomical geodesy.
Career in Astronomy
Pinigin's impressive career in astronomy began at the prestigious Pulkovo Observatory in Saint Petersburg, where he worked from 1965 to 1986. During this time, he furthered his knowledge by completing his Ph.D. thesis and earning a candidate's degree in physical and mathematical sciences.
In 1986, Pinigin was appointed head of the Nikolaev branch of the Pulkovo Observatory, which flourished under his leadership. His contributions extended beyond science, as he played a crucial role in advocating for funding and expanding the observatory's infrastructure.
Scientific Achievements
Pinigin primarily focused on the fields of astrometry and astronomical instrumentation. He made significant advances in the accuracy and precision of astronomical observations, contributing to our understanding of the universe. His expertise in telescope design and calibration earned him recognition in the scientific community.
Honors and Recognition
In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Pinigin was awarded the title of "Honored Scientist of Ukraine" in 2002. He was also elected as a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. In 2003, a minor planet discovered in 1977 was named "7976 Pinigin" in his honor.
