Georg Braun was an Austrian footballer who made his mark as a skilled midfielder. He is renowned for his participation in the 1934 FIFA World Cup.
Humble Beginnings
Born in Vienna in the heart of the vibrant Prater district, Georg Braun was the son of a railway worker. His passion for football blossomed at a young age, leading him to join the local club Donaueschingen. After showcasing his exceptional talent, he moved to the second-tier club Straßenbahn.
Rise to Prominence
In 1925, Braun's career took a significant turn when he signed with Wiener. It was during this tenure that he honed his skills, leading the team to four Austrian Cup finals, securing the coveted trophy in 1931.
International Debut
Braun's impressive performances at club level earned him his first call-up to the Austrian national team in 1928. His international debut came against Hungary in Budapest. Over the next few years, he represented his country on 13 occasions, scoring one goal.
International and Club Career
In addition to his national team appearances, Braun also played for the Vienna XI and Lower Austrian XI, making 25 appearances in total. After a brief stint with Wacker, he embarked on a journey to France in 1935, joining Rennes. In 1939, he returned to Austria as a player-coach for Linz.
War and Post-War Life
During World War II, Braun served on the side of Nazi Germany and was captured as a prisoner of war by Soviet forces. Upon his release, he dedicated his life to coaching, mentoring players at LASK, Upper Austria XI, Ethiopia, VOEST, and Grün-Weiß Micheldorf.
Tragic End
Georg Braun's remarkable life came to an end in 1963 when he succumbed to cancer. His legacy as a talented footballer and dedicated coach continues to inspire generations of young athletes.
