Georg Ferdinand Duckwitz
Early Life and CareerGeorg Ferdinand Duckwitz was born into an aristocratic family in Bremen, Germany, on September 29, 1904. After completing his schooling, he worked in the coffee trade before being assigned to Denmark by his firm. There, he developed connections within the business and political spheres.
Nazi Affiliation and War Service
In 1932, Duckwitz joined the Nazi Party (NSDAP). In 1940, following the German occupation of Denmark, he was drafted into government service and worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1942, he served as the embassy's naval attaché in Denmark.
Disillusionment with Nazism
Over time, Duckwitz became disillusioned with National Socialism, particularly its brutal treatment of Jews. On September 11, 1943, he learned of a plan to deport all Jews in Denmark to extermination camps.
Sabotaged Final Solution
horrified, Duckwitz informed the Swedish Prime Minister and, on September 29, alerted Danish Social Democratic leaders of the impending deportations. As a result, thousands of Danish Jews were hidden or transported to Sweden within 72 hours.
Post-War Career
After the war, Duckwitz returned to the Foreign Service and served as West Germany's ambassador to Denmark from 1955-1958. In 1971, he received the title of Righteous Among the Nations from Israel's Yad Vashem Institute.
Legacy
Georg Ferdinand Duckwitz's courageous actions saved the lives of nearly all Danish Jews during the Holocaust. His legacy as a humanitarian and anti-Nazi activist continues to inspire generations.
