From Intern to Director-GeneralGeorge Entwistle embarked on his 23-year career at BBC in an internship before rising through the ranks to become its Editor-in-Chief. On September 17, 2012, Entwistle assumed the post of Director-General and Editor-in-Chief. However, his tenure was overshadowed by a series of scandals. Just weeks into his leadership, accusations of child sexual abuse emerged against late BBC host Jimmy Savile. Newsnight had investigated the allegations but failed to air the expose due to concerns about a potential obituary program for Savile.

Resignation and Controversy
On November 9, 2012, Entwistle apologized for the botched Newsnight broadcast. The following day, he announced his resignation in a live televised address. However, even his departure was met with controversy.
The BBC Trust, the corporation's governing body, awarded Entwistle a £450,000 severance package, equivalent to a year's salary. Critics argued that this was excessive, given the brevity and failures of his tenure. The total payout to Entwistle, including pension contributions, exceeded £1.3 million.
