Early Life and Education
Georgy Dmitrievich Afanasyev was a renowned Russian geologist and petrographer. Born in the early 20th century, Afanasyev graduated from the Geological Department of the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Leningrad University in 1930. He then commenced his career at the Petrographic Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
Scientific Achievements
In 1935, Afanasyev was awarded a Candidate of Geologico-Mineralogical Sciences degree without completing a dissertation. He successfully defended his doctoral dissertation in 1948. From 1937 to 1956, he worked at the Institute of Geological Sciences of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1956, he joined the Institute of Geology of Ore Deposits, Petrography, Mineralogy, and Geochemistry of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
Military Service and Return to Science
Afanasyev served in the Red Army during World War II, participating in the defense of Stalingrad. Critically wounded in 1943, he was demobilized and returned to his academic pursuits.
Contributions to the Field
Afanasyev's scientific contributions focused on the petrology and genesis of sedimentary and igneous rocks, petrography and geochemistry of ancient formations, absolute age of geological formations, and the nature of the lower crust and upper mantle. He was instrumental in organizing and participating in four All-Union Petrographic Conferences.
Leadership and Recognition
In 1953, Afanasyev was elected a Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences for his fundamental theoretical works. He served as Scientific Secretary of the Department of Geological and Geographical Sciences (1950-1953), Deputy Academician-Secretary of the same Department (1953-1958), Deputy Chief Editor of the journal "Izvestiya AN SSSR. Geological Series" (1954-1957), Chief Editor of the abstract journal "Geology" (1957-1964), Chairman of the Commission for Determining the Absolute Age of Geological Formations (1964-1975), and Chairman of the Petrographic Committee of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
Honors and Legacy
Afanasyev received numerous honors, including the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and the Order of the Badge of Honor. His research legacy continues to inspire scientists and contribute to the advancement of geological knowledge.
