Stepan Dmitrievich Batishchev-Tarasov: Soviet Geological Engineer
Stepan Dmitrievich Batishchev-Tarasov (1908-1957) was a renowned Soviet geological engineer known for his innovative work in mineral exploration and development.
Early Career and Education
Batishchev-Tarasov's career began in 1927 as a worker at the Samara Match Factory. He later enrolled at Tomsk State University and Novocherkassk Geological Exploration Institute (1929-1931). After graduating, he worked as a foreman at various geological exploration parties (1931-1934).
Gold Exploration and Research
From 1933 to 1935, Batishchev-Tarasov conducted exploration work on gold deposits in Kazakhstan. He developed a methodology for searching and exploring gold placers and published a notable article on the theories of gold transport in placers.
Iron Ore Exploration and Development
In 1935, Batishchev-Tarasov graduated from the Leningrad Mining Institute. He then moved to the Urals and focused on exploring iron ore deposits. He played a significant role in assessing the Ayat Iron Ore Basin and devised a method for hydraulic mining of iron ore deposits.
Exploration of Vyatka-Type Iron Deposits
From 1939 to 1948, Batishchev-Tarasov led exploration work on Vyatka-type iron ores. He estimated the reserves of major deposits and proposed a hydraulic method for mining them. His research and publications on the methodology of exploring these deposits were widely recognized.
Aтасуй Iron Ore Deposit and Geological Studies
In 1948, Batishchev-Tarasov oversaw geological exploration at the Atausuy Iron Ore Deposit. His findings provided a reliable resource base for the Karaganda Metallurgical Combine. Later, he served as Chief Engineer of the Kustanay Geological Exploration Trust (1951-1956).
Comprehensive Geological Exploration of the Eastern Zauralye
From 1956 onward, Batishchev-Tarasov focused on comprehensive geological exploration of the Eastern Zauralye. He proposed and partially implemented a plan for regional geological and geophysical mapping. After his untimely death, these efforts gradually diminished.
Legacy and Recognition
In 1958, Batishchev-Tarasov was elected Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR. A street in the city of Rudny, Kazakhstan, bears his name in honor of his contributions to geological exploration and development.
