The Life and Work of Vasily Alekseyevich Kurdyukov, Hydrologist

Early Life and Education

Vasily Alekseyevich Kurdyukov (1903-1980) was born in 1903 in the village of Maslovo, Tver Governorate, Russia. After completing a 9-year school in Petergof, he pursued his education at the Petrograd Construction Technical School, the Petrograd Institute of Metallurgy and Chemistry, and the Leningrad Geological Survey Institute.

Career as a Hydrologist

In 1930, Kurdyukov first arrived in Kazakhstan as a student. He worked as a senior drilling master and senior technical geologist. From 1931-1932, he led a hydrogeological survey expedition in the Karaganda geological base, where he discovered a vast underground water stream in the Karaganda depression. This discovery became a significant geological finding and paved the way for the development of the Karaganda coal basin.

In 1932, Kurdyukov graduated with a thesis on "Water Supply for Karaganda's Workers' Settlements" and moved to Karaganda for permanent work. From 1932-1936, he supervised all hydrogeological investigations in the "Kargeolbaza" and "Kargeolburo." From 1937-1940, he worked in "Kazgeoltrest," "Kazgeolupravlenie," and the Karaganda Geological Administration.

Contributions During World War II

During World War II, Kurdyukov ensured water supply for the "Kazakhstan Magnitka" (Temirtau), earning him the "For Labor Valour" medal in 1945. In addition, he received the "For Valiant Labour in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945" medal.

Later Career and Recognition

In the post-war period, Kurdyukov continued his hydrogeological work, locating water sources for major cities and industries in Kazakhstan, including Alma-Ata, Shymkent, Karaganda, Kostanay, Akmola, and the Donskoye chromite mines. He received several "Discoverer of Deposits" badges for his contributions to mineral exploration.

Kurdyukov's legacy as a renowned hydrologist continues to be recognized in Kazakhstan. His discoveries have had a profound impact on the development of the country's water resources and industrial centers.
