Early Life and Education
Konstantin Moiseevich Levandovsky was born into a peasant family in Novo-Danilovskaya Volost, Melitopol Uyezd, Taurida Governorate (present-day Ukraine). After completing a four-year teaching program in Melitopol, he worked as a farmer.
Military Service in the Tsarist Army
Levandovsky enlisted in the 3rd Elisavetgrad Hussar Regiment and later enrolled in the Elisavetgrad Cavalry School, where he studied for a year and a half. He fought in World War I for the Tsarist army.
Bolshevik Revolutionary
In 1917, Levandovsky joined the Bolshevik Party and became a prominent figure in the Russian Revolution. He led a Red Guard detachment that crossed the border from Bessarabia into Ukraine, and was elected chairman of the Melitopol Military Revolutionary Tribunal.
Military Career in the Red Army
Levandovsky became a close associate of Ivan Fedorovich Fedko, a prominent Bolshevik military commander. Together, they fought against General Lavr Kornilov in the North Caucasus, and Levandovsky commanded various units, including the Crimean Black Sea Cavalry Regiment, the Belorechensky Military District, the Cavalry Corps of the Red Army in the North Caucasus, and the Cavalry Corps of the 11th Army.
Challenges and Captivity
In August 1919, Levandovsky and his wife were captured by rebellious Makhnovist forces led by Fyodor Zubko. Levandovsky was held hostage but later managed to escape with a group of other commanders, sustaining serious injuries in the process. After the defeat of the Makhnovist army, he returned to the 58th Division of the 11th Army.
Post-War Career
Levandovsky served as military commissar of Melitopol Uyezd and later of the Armavir Department of the Kuban Oblast. He continued to play an active role in Soviet military and political affairs until his eventual retirement.
