Early Life

Geray Asadov was born in 1923 in the village of Shakhsevan (now Beylagan district, Azerbaijan). Of Azerbaijani descent, he received basic education and subsequently worked in a collective farm.

Military Service

In 1942, Asadov was drafted into the Red Army and joined the 281st Guards Rifle Regiment in June of that year. He fought on the Kursk Bulge and in Moldova.

Combat Actions

On October 6, 1944, during a battle for the village of Vlaha (10 km southwest of Cluj, Romania), Asadov infiltrated enemy lines and eliminated over ten Germans with grenades. In the battle for the city of Huandin, he destroyed an enemy mortar crew and used their mortar to kill more than twenty German soldiers and officers.

Heroic Sacrifice

On October 12, during the battle for the Marghita station in Northern Transylvania, Asadov used grenades to destroy an enemy machine gun nest that was impeding the advance. However, when he attempted an attack, the machine gun resumed firing. With no grenades left, Asadov covered the firing point with his own body, exclaiming, "Forward, for the Motherland!"

Recognition

For his bravery and sacrifice, Geray Asadov was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on March 24, 1945.
