Early Years

Gianluca Grava began his footballing journey at the local academy in Santo Prisco. From there, he progressed to Casertana, where he made his senior debut at the tender age of 16. During the 1995/1996 campaign, Grava played a pivotal role in helping the club gain promotion to Serie C2.

Moving Up the Ranks

In 1997, Grava joined Turris, accumulating 30 appearances for the club. He participated in the promotion playoffs against Lodigiani, but Turris came up short in both legs. Undeterred, Grava secured a move to Serie B club Ternana at the end of the season.

He spent six seasons with Ternana, showcasing his defensive prowess in 153 matches, contributing a solitary goal. However, the club failed to climb higher than 7th place during his tenure.

Loan Spell and Joining Napoli

In September 2004, Grava embarked on a loan spell at Catanzaro. Just four months later, he found himself at Napoli. Grava swiftly earned a regular starting berth and played a significant role in the club's successive promotions to Serie B and Serie A.

Serie A Debut and Captaincy

On September 2, 2007, Grava made his Serie A debut in Napoli's 5-0 triumph over Udinese. He did so with the honor of captaining the team, a testament to his leadership qualities.

Gradual Decline and Resurgence

From the 2007/2008 season onwards, Grava's playing time gradually diminished. The arrival of Roberto Donadoni as coach brought him back into the starting lineup, but under Walter Mazzarri, Grava returned to his previous diminished role.

Contract Extension and Injury

Despite his reduced playing time, Grava pledged his future to Napoli by signing a contract extension until 2012 at the end of the 2009/2010 season. However, misfortune struck in January 2011 when he suffered a severe knee injury.
