Biography of Gilles Jacob

Gilles Jacob is a French film critic, producer, and director who served as the President of the Cannes Film Festival from 2001 to 2014. Prior to that, he was the artistic director of the festival from 1977 to 2001.

A Miraculous Escape

As a Jew, Gilles Jacob miraculously escaped death at the hands of the Nazis by hiding behind an accordion. This scene was depicted by Louis Malle in the film "Au revoir les enfants."

Early Career

Even as a student, Gilles Jacob showed his passion for cinema by publishing a film magazine called "Raccords" from 1950 to 1951. One of the early articles published in the magazine was written by François Truffaut.

The Metaphor of the Stairs

Gilles Jacob once said, "The staircase is a religious metaphor. At festivals in Venice and Berlin, the entrance to the premiere theater is on the ground floor, just like with the Oscars. But here, in Cannes, you ascend higher and higher."
