Giuliano Colautti

Early Career: Trieste and National Team Debut

Born into a humble farming family in Trieste, Giuliano Colautti overcame poverty and began his football career at age 16 with local club Triestina. Despite traveling to training on a bicycle, Colautti excelled and played for the club for 10 seasons, amassing the second-highest number of appearances (275).

In 1935, Colautti made his international debut for Italy, a highlight of his career. Three years later, he played a pivotal role in Italy's victory at the 1938 FIFA World Cup, scoring twice in the final against Hungary and finishing the tournament with four goals.

Juventus, Vicenza, and Wartime Career Gap

After the World Cup, Colautti joined Juventus but struggled to maintain his high level of performance. He spent two seasons at the Turin club before moving to Vicenza, where a conflict with the coaching staff led to his departure.

During World War II, Colautti was without a club for several years. He returned to Triestina briefly in 1945 before ending his playing career at Padova in Serie B.

Coaching Career and Late Life Struggles

Retiring as a player, Colautti embarked on a coaching career. However, his tenure at Ternana ended with relegation to the fourth division, and his subsequent stints at various lower-league clubs were not particularly successful.

Financial difficulties plagued Colautti during his time as coach of Tarros. He even resorted to pawning his World Cup gold medal. Later, he emigrated to Libya and eventually returned to Trieste, where he lived in poverty until his death.
