Biography of Battista di Antonio

Early Life and Training

Battista di Antonio, also known as Boccatis or Boccato da Camerino, began his artistic career in the 1440s. He trained under the renowned Frate Filippo Lippi in Florence, collaborating with Giovanni Angelo d'Antonio on Lippi's workshop.

Artistic Influences and Work

Di Antonio's early works reflect the influences of Fra Lippi, Fra Angelico, and Paolo Uccello. He later embraced the style of Domenico di Bartolo, a prominent Sienese painter.

Di Antonio became a citizen of Perugia in 1445 and established himself as an accomplished artist in Umbria. In 1467, he received the prestigious commission to paint frescoes in the Ducal Palace of Urbino for the renowned patron Federico III da Montefeltro.

Notable Works

Among di Antonio's most celebrated works are the frescoes in the Urbino Ducal Palace. They depict scenes from the life of Federico da Montefeltro and reflect the grand patronage and humanist ideals of the Renaissance court.

Legacy and later Years

Di Antonio's influence on subsequent artists is less documented, but his contributions to the development of early Renaissance painting in Umbria remain significant. He is last mentioned in historical records in 1480.
