Giovanni Pellielo, Legendary Italian Trap Shooter
Early Career and Olympic DebutGiovanni Pellielo, an Italian trap shooter, embarked on his international career in 1990. That year, he triumphed as the European Youth Champion in trap. In 1992, he made his Olympic debut in mixed trap but placed 10th in the qualification rounds, missing the final.
World Record and First World Title
On April 1, 1994, in Nicosia, Pellielo achieved a historic feat. He became the first athlete to shoot a perfect 125 out of 125 in a qualification round, setting a world record. The following year, at the same shooting range, he claimed his maiden World Championship title, amassing 148 out of 150 possible points.
Olympic Disappointment and More World Titles
Pellielo's 1996 Olympic campaign in Atlanta was less successful. He missed five targets in the qualification rounds, finishing 13th with 120 points and missing the final. However, he bounced back in 1997, winning the World and European Championships. In 1998, he added another World Championship gold medal to his tally in Barcelona.
Bronze and Silver Medals at the Olympics
Sydney 2000 presented Pellielo with an opportunity to shine. He qualified third with 116 points, six behind leader Michael Diamond. In the final, he held onto his third-place position, earning a bronze medal. In 2004, Pellielo was again a medal contender but fell short. He conceded two shots to Alexey Alipov in the qualifications (122 to 124). Alipov's flawless performance in the final prevented Pellielo from advancing beyond the silver medal position.
Final Olympic Appearances
At the Beijing 2008 Games, Pellielo narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final, finishing one shot behind Alipov and David Kostelecky (120 to 121). In the final round, he shot perfectly but was matched by Kostelecky, who maintained a one-shot advantage to win the gold medal.
London 2012 marked Pellielo's final Olympic appearance. He failed to reach the final after scoring 121 in the qualification rounds, finishing in eighth place.
Accolades and Honors
Throughout his career, Pellielo has been recognized for his exceptional achievements. He is a four-time Olympic medalist, a multiple World and European Champion, and a medalist at the European Games. In 2008, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic for his services to the nation.
