Results of the Russian Shooting Championships

The Russian Shooting Championships and the All-Russian Pneumatic Shooting Competitions recently concluded in Iksha, Moscow Oblast. Based on the results, the composition of the national team representing Russia at the XXVII World Summer Universiade 2013 in Kazan from July 7-18 has been determined.

Team Selection Criteria

The Russian shooting team comprises 20 athletes (11 men and 9 women). Competitors qualified based on the highest aggregate scores from three events: the Russian Team Championship (April 13-20), the Russian Cup (June 1-8), and the Russian Championship (June 18-25). If multiple athletes had equal scores, the one who achieved a higher ranking at the Russian Championship was given precedence.

Composition of the Team

In each discipline, three athletes will compete: the two with the highest qualifying scores and a third athlete who qualified for the Universiade in other disciplines but has the highest score in the specific discipline.

Analysis of the Team

Tatiana Goldobina, the senior coach of the Russian youth shooting team, commented on the team's composition and the qualifying process. According to Goldobina, qualification results were solely considered because under new rules, the competition in the finals begins anew, making the outcome more unpredictable.

Surprises

Anna Sushko, who participated in the World Championships last year, did not perform well enough to make the team. She was replaced by Polina Khorosheva, who recently joined the adult team.

In women's pistol, Daria Danilina qualified unexpectedly after performing poorly in previous tournaments. Conversely, Andrei Shchepetkov missed qualifying for the rapid-fire pistol event by one point due to an error at the Russian Team Championship in Krasnodar. He will compete in the standard pistol instead.

Main Rival: China

Goldobina identifies China as the main rival for Russia at the Universiade. China will field a young, experienced team, including several Olympians. Russia has only half the team's experience in international competitions.

Russian Team's Strengths

Goldobina believes Russia is strongest in men's pistol. In other events, there are typically two strong leaders, but the third team member is relatively weaker. For example, Daria Vdovina is highly skilled in the three-position rifle event, but her teammates lack experience.
