Early Life and Education

Giuseppe Giacomini was born on September 7, 1940, in Veggiano, a small town near Padua, Italy. He began studying vocal technique under the guidance of Elena Ceriati, Marcello del Monaco, and Vladimiro Badiali.

Professional Career

After achieving some success in vocal competitions throughout Italy, Giacomini made his professional debut in 1966 at the Vercelli Opera House, performing the role of Pinkerton in Puccini's "Madama Butterfly." In 1969, he sang Turiddu in "Cavalleria rusticana" and Des Grieux in "Manon Lescaut" in Parma and Modena.

In 1970, Giacomini had his first engagement outside of Italy, performing once again as Des Grieux in "Manon Lescaut" by Giacomo Puccini in Berlin. The following year, he sang the lead male role in "Il Tabarro" in Lisbon, followed by performances in Barcelona in 1972 and Vienna and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich in 1973.

In 1974, Giacomini made his debut at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, performing in "Madama Butterfly" and "Il Tabarro." The overwhelming success led him to return to Italy, where he performed in renowned opera houses such as La Scala, Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Teatro Regio di Parma, and the Rome Opera.

In 1975, he sang in "Fedora" by Umberto Giordano in Mantua. That same year, Giacomini made his North American debut, portraying Ramerrez in Puccini's "La fanciulla del West" in Connecticut. A year later, he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in "La forza del destino." This performance garnered him several contracts with opera houses that focused on the Italian repertoire for the next few years.

In 1980, after years of international success, Giacomini finally performed at Covent Garden in "La fanciulla del West." Noteworthy engagements include his participation in the world premiere of Marco Tutino's opera "La Lupa" in Livorno in 1990, where he portrayed the role of Nanni. He also sang for the British royal family at Covent Garden in 1988 and performed for Mikhail Gorbachev in Moscow. Additionally, he participated in the historic production of "Aida" against the backdrop of the pyramids in Cairo in 1987 and sang the role of Calaf in "Turandot" in Seoul for the opening of the Olympic Games in 1988.

Giacomini also performed in rare operas by Donizetti, such as "Fausta" in Rome in 1981 and Leoncavallo's "Medici" in Frankfurt in 1993.

Despite his immensely successful career and extraordinary voice, Giacomini never achieved widespread recognition in the opera world. Although there were rumors of his retirement in 2000, he continued to tour worldwide and, at the age of 60, performed as Cavaradossi in "Tosca" at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.

In 2010, Giacomini embarked on a concert tour in China, performing alongside the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of conductor Muhai Tang. On September 17, 2010, he gave a solo concert at the newly constructed Tianjin Concert Hall.
