Biography of Giuseppe Taddei

Giuseppe Taddei was an Italian opera singer and baritone who primarily performed in the operas of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Giuseppe Verdi. He occasionally sang comedic bass roles as well. Taddei possessed a soft, velvety, and warm voice of rare beauty, which he maintained throughout his life.

Early Life and Career

Giuseppe Taddei was born on June 26, 1916, in Genoa, Italy. He showed a natural inclination towards singing and acting from a young age. At the age of 18, he participated in an opera singing competition in Rome and emerged as the winner. He joined the Rome Opera and seemed destined for a brilliant international career. However, in 1942, he was drafted into the army and sent to the Balkans to fight against Greek partisans. Despite not firing a single shot, Taddei and the entire garrison were captured and sent to a German concentration camp in September 1943.

Surviving the Concentration Camp

The camp became the most terrifying period of Taddei's life. Like the other prisoners, he suffered from hunger and cold. The only thing that helped him and his fellow inmates, including other opera lovers, survive and hold onto hope was singing.

Post-War Career

After the end of World War II, Taddei resumed his opera career. He performed at the Vienna State Opera for two seasons in 1946. In 1947, he made his debut in London at the Cambridge Theatre. The following year, he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival, La Scala in Milan, and the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples. In 1957, Giuseppe Taddei made his first appearance on the American stage at the San Francisco Opera, followed by a performance at the Lyric Opera in Chicago in 1959. From 1960 to 1967, he regularly performed at the Royal Opera House in London.

Wide Repertoire and Legacy

Taddei excelled in both comedic and dramatic roles. His repertoire included more than 50 operas, such as Figaro in "The Marriage of Figaro" and "The Barber of Seville," Leporello and Don Giovanni in "Don Giovanni," Belcore and Dulcamara in "The Elixir of Love," Ernani, Macbeth, Rigoletto, Amonasro in "Aida," Iago in "Otello," Falstaff, Barnaba in "La Gioconda," Gérard in "Andrea Chénier," and Scarpia in "Tosca," among many others. His vocal abilities did not decline with age, and Taddei enjoyed a long career, performing well into his mature years. He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York on September 25, 1985, at the age of 69, in the role of Falstaff. Taddei left behind numerous recordings, including his interpretations of Figaro and Leporello conducted by Carlo Maria Giulini, Macbeth with Swedish soprano Birgit Nilsson under the baton of Thomas Schippers, and Scarpia and Falstaff with conductor Herbert von Karajan.

Giuseppe Taddei passed away on June 2, 2010, in Rome at the age of 83.
