Early Life and Education
Grete Faremo was born on June 16, 1955, in Arendal, Norway, to Osvald Faremo, a member of the Norwegian Parliament for the Labour Party, and Tora Aamlid. She grew up in Byglandsfjord, Agder, and graduated from Hornnes High School in 1973. Faremo earned a Master of Laws degree from the University of Oslo.
Professional Career
After graduating, Faremo began her career as a lawyer in Norway's Ministry of Finance (1979-1980). She then worked for the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (1980-1984) and served as head of department in the Ministry of Development (1984-1986).
From 1986 to 1990, Faremo held leadership roles in various companies, including Aker Eiendom AS, Theatrium AS, and Norsk Arbeiderpresse (later Amedia AS). She subsequently worked as executive vice president for Storebrand (1997-2004) and director for legal and corporate affairs at Microsoft (2004-2008).
Political Appointments
Faremo's political career began with her election to the Norwegian Parliament (Storting) in 1993. She served as Minister of International Development in the government of Gro Harlem Brundtland (1990-1992), Minister of Justice and Public Security (1992-1996, 2011-2013), Minister of Oil and Energy (1996), and Minister of Defense (2009-2011).
In 2014, Faremo was appointed Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) by then-UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon.
Personal Life
Faremo married actor Magne Lindholm in 2014. She has a daughter, Oda Faremo Lindholm, a journalist.
