Ukrainian Nationalist Leader
Early Life and CareerVladimir Kubiyovych(September 23, 1900 - November 2, 1985) was a prominent Ukrainian nationalist and scholar. Born in Nowy Sącz, Galicia, he enrolled in Jagiellonian University in Kraków in 1918. During the Polish-Ukrainian War (1918-1919), he served in the artillery of the Ukrainian Galician Army.
Academic and Political Activity
From 1928 to 1939, Kubiyovych worked as an associate professor at Jagiellonian University. In 1940, he became a professor at the Ukrainian Free University in Prague. He actively participated in the activities of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), aligning himself with the faction led by Andriy Melnyk and becoming its chief ideologue.
Collaboration with the Germans
After the German occupation of Poland, Kubiyovych returned to Lviv and collaborated with the occupiers. In April 1940, he became chairman of the Ukrainian Central Committee in Kraków. He also led the Ukrainian delegation that met with Governor-General Hans Frank on Hitler's birthday in April 1940.
Creation of Ukrainian SS Units
In April 1943, Kubiyovych played a key role in the establishment of the Military Administration in Lviv. He initiated negotiations to create Ukrainian SS units and presented conditions, including amnesty for political prisoners, improved working conditions for forced laborers, and the repatriation of Ukrainian businesses. These conditions were accepted by the German command, and the "Galicia" Division was formed to fight against the Red Army in Ukraine.
Post-War Exile
As Soviet troops advanced into Ukraine, Kubiyovych fled to Germany. After the war, he emigrated to France. From 1947 to 1951, he served as general secretary of the People's Labour Union (NTS), and from 1952 onward, as its chairman.
Scholarly Contributions
Demographics and GeographyAs a renowned demographer, Kubiyovych authored approximately 80 works on Ukrainian demography and Carpathian anthropogeography. He compiled the "Atlas of Ukraine and Adjacent Regions," statistical reviews, and maps of Ukraine and Galicia.
Encyclopedia of Ukrainian Studies
Kubiyo's most significant scholarly work was the "Encyclopedia of Ukrainian Studies," which he edited and contributed numerous articles to. Published abroad from 1949 to 1952, the encyclopedia became a major reference work for Ukrainian scholars.
Legacy
In March 2002, a memorial plaque commemorating Kubiyovych was installed on the building in Lviv where he had worked during the German occupation. The inscription reads, "Defender of Ukrainianhood."
