Grigor I Dopyan was an Armenian prince who ruled over the principality of Khachen in the 13th century. His domain encompassed the upper region of the Khachen principality.

Lineage and Early History

Grigor was the son of Hasan I and Dopa, the daughter of Sarkis Zakaryan. His maternal aunt was married to Hasan-Jalal, another prominent Armenian prince. Grigor's name first appears in a 1220 inscription at the Khadavank Monastery.

Participation in the Mesopotamian Campaign

Grigor, along with his son Sevada, accompanied the Mongol general Batu on his campaign in Mesopotamia from 1242 to 1243. This campaign played a significant role in the Mongol conquest of the Middle East.

Succession and Legacy

Grigor's son, Hasan, inherited the principality of Khachen after his father's death. Another son, Ovanes, took monastic vows. Grigor left behind a small "Chronography" that chronicles his experiences during the Mongol invasions of Persia and Armenia, including the sack of Khachen.
