Gyula Zsengellér: A Legendary Hungarian Forward

Early Career in Hungary

Gyula Zsengellér began his footballing career in 1935 with the struggling Hungarian club Salgótarjáni BTC. Despite his team's poor performance, Zsengellér impressed with his attacking prowess, scoring 19 goals in a disappointing season for the team.

Success with Újpest FC

His outstanding performance attracted the attention of top Hungarian clubs, leading him to join Újpest FC in 1936. With Újpest, Zsengellér immediately established himself as a prolific goalscorer, netting 35 in his first season and coming second in the scoring charts. He then claimed back-to-back Hungarian league top scorer titles, including an incredible 56 goals in one season, contributing more than half of his team's total goals.

International Career with Hungary

Zsengellér debuted for the Hungarian national team in 1936. He made a significant impact in the 1938 FIFA World Cup, scoring six goals and finishing as the second-highest goalscorer in the tournament, just one behind Brazilian legend Leonidas.

Decline in Italy and Later Career

In 1947, Zsengellér left Hungary for Italy, where he played for two seasons with AS Roma. However, his goalscoring prowess diminished in Italy, as he managed only six goals. He later played for Anconitana in Serie C and briefly coached Cosenza before heading to Colombia. In 1952, he played and coached for Deportivo Samarios in Colombia, marking the end of his playing career.
