Suri Ríos Sosa: A Daughter of Politics
Early Life and EducationSuri Ríos Sosa was born into a prominent Guatemalan military family. Her father, Efraín Ríos Montt, was a former president of Guatemala. From a young age, she witnessed political strife and upheaval firsthand. Sosa's father's conversion to evangelical Protestantism and subsequent presidency during the height of the civil war shaped her ideological views. She lost her brother in a helicopter crash during the conflict and developed a strong anti-communist worldview.
Sosa received her early education in Madrid, where her father served as Guatemala's military attaché. Upon returning home, she graduated from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at the Francisco Marroquín University. She also attended political courses in Washington and Taipei.
Political Career
Republican FrontIn 1989, Sosa joined her father's conservative-populist party, the Guatemalan Republican Front (FRG). She handled administrative and international relations for the party. In 1995, she was elected to parliament. Sosa served on committees for health, social security, and foreign affairs, focusing on gender issues, social policy, international relations, and the fight against AIDS and smoking.
Leadership and Departure
In 2004, Sosa succeeded her father as president of the FRG. Under her leadership, the party maintained its traditional "riosmontismo" platform, emphasizing conservative republicanism. However, liberal tendencies within the FRG gradually gained influence. In 2011, Sosa's presidential candidacy was not approved, and she resigned from the party. Her term as a parliamentarian ended in 2012.
Presidential Candidacy
After leaving the FRG, Sosa remained active in politics, becoming a leader within the VIVA party and Guatemala's right-wing. From 2013, she focused on defending her father against legal prosecution. Sosa strongly objected to her father's placement in a psychiatric hospital for a forensic evaluation.
In April 2015, the VIVA party nominated Sosa as its presidential candidate. She was supported by Avemilgua, an association of civil war veterans and former military personnel allied with Ríos Montt. However, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal barred her from running due to her relationship with her former dictator father. Sosa challenged the ban in court.
Personal Life
Sosa has been married four times. Her husbands include political activist Geovanni Chavez, parliamentarian José García Bravatti, entrepreneur Roberto López Villatoro, and American lawyer and politician Jerry Weller. She uses the name Suri Ríos Sosa de Weller after marrying Weller in 2004. They have a daughter together.
Legacy and Influence
Suri Ríos Sosa is a controversial figure in Guatemalan politics. She is a staunch supporter of her father's legacy and promotes conservative policies. Political commentators have compared her to Keiko Fujimori of Peru. Despite her electoral setbacks, Sosa remains a prominent voice for the Guatemalan right-wing.
