Hal Fishman: The Longest-Tenured News Anchor
Early Life and EducationHal Fishman was born in Brooklyn and earned his bachelor's degree from Cornell University, where he began his broadcasting career as a radio host. He went on to pursue a Master's in Political Science at UCLA and briefly taught as an assistant professor at Cal State LA.
Return to Broadcasting
In 1960, KCOP offered Fishman a chance to host a live television course, reigniting his passion for media. He soon became a news anchor and began his historic run on television.
KTLA and Historic News Coverage
In 1965, Fishman joined KTLA and became a field reporter, covering the Watts Riots from the LAPD command center. From 1975 to 2007, he anchored "News At Ten" on the network. He covered major events such as the assassination of Robert Kennedy, the Sylmar and Northridge earthquakes, and Pope John Paul II's 1987 visit to Southern California. In 1991, he participated in the taping of the infamous Rodney King police beating footage.
Accolades and Legacy
Fishman received the Associated Press Radio-TV Association's first Lifetime Achievement Award and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. KTLA named a news studio in his honor. He authored two books: "Flight 902 is Down" and "Vatican Target."
Aviation and Records
A skilled pilot, Fishman set 13 records for speed and altitude. He received the Louis Blériot Medal from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale in 1969.
Final Days and Legacy
Fishman died on August 7, 2007, at his home, just 18 days shy of his 76th birthday. He had been undergoing treatment for a liver infection when cancer of the liver and rectum was discovered. The day before his illness, KTLA honored his 47 years in television with a gala at the Autry National Museum in Los Angeles. Hal Fishman is remembered as a legendary news anchor and a significant contributor to the field of television journalism.
