Early Life and Education
Born in Hiratsuka, Kanagawa, Japan, Hanzo Yamanashi's military career began with his graduation from the Imperial Japanese Army Academy in 1886 and the Imperial War College in 1892.
Military Service in the Sino-Japanese War
During the First Sino-Japanese War, Yamanashi served in the 4th Infantry Brigade of the Second Japanese Army. Following the war, he held various administrative roles.
Overseas Assignments as Military Attaché
From 1898 to 1902, Yamanashi served as a military attaché in Germany. He continued in this role in Austria-Hungary from 1905 to 1907 and Germany from 1907 onward.
Commanding Roles During the Russo-Japanese War
During the Russo-Japanese War, Yamanashi served as deputy commander of the Second Japanese Army and later commanded the Third Division.
Later Career and Promotions
After the war, Yamanashi was promoted to major general in 1911 and commanded the 30th Infantry Brigade. He later commanded the 1st Infantry Brigade in 1912. In 1916, he became a lieutenant general and a full general in 1921.
War Ministry and Retirement
Yamanashi served as the Minister of War in the cabinets of Hara Takashi, Takahashi Korekiyo, and Kato Tomosaburo from 1921 to 1923. He retired from active military service in 1927.
Governor-Generalship of Korea
From 1927 to 1929, Yamanashi was appointed Governor-General of Korea. His rule is often viewed as a return to the policies of Terauchi Masatake and Hasegawa Yoshimichi.
