Early Life and Education

Hanneke Bruins Slot was born on October 20, 1977, in Apeldoorn, Netherlands, to politician Harm Bruins Slot. She completed her schooling in 1996 and enrolled at Utrecht University, where she pursued a degree in Constitutional and Administrative Law, Public Administration, and Management, graduating in 2001.

Career in Public Service

After university, Bruins Slot embarked on her career in public service at the Dutch Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations. From 2001 to 2003, she served as a Policy Officer in the Department of Governance and Legislation. She subsequently became a Senior Policy Officer in the Administrative Department from 2004 to 2005.

Military Career

In 2005, Bruins Slot pursued her passion for military service by enrolling at the Royal Military Academy in Breda to become an artillery officer. She served in the Royal Netherlands Army from 2007 to 2010, holding various leadership positions, including Platoon Commander of self-propelled howitzers from 2007 to 2009. In 2008, she was deployed to the Uruzgan province of Afghanistan as part of the Dutch contingent serving with the ISAF international forces.

Entry into Politics

In 2010, Bruins Slot made the transition from military to politics. She was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Dutch House of Representatives for the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) party. She was re-elected in 2012 and 2017, serving as an MP for nearly nine years during which she was involved in various parliamentary committees.

Current Role

After serving as an Executive Deputy for the province of Utrecht from 2019 to 2022, Bruins Slot was appointed Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations in Prime Minister Mark Rutte's fourth coalition cabinet on January 10, 2022. In this role, she is responsible for internal security, public order, and constitutional reforms.
