Hannes Van Dahl: A Sabaton Drummer's Journey
Early Life and Musical BeginningsHannes Van Dahl was born as Karl-Hannes Dahl in Sweden. Growing up in a skate-punk culture, he initially gravitated to bass guitar but quickly switched to drums. His passion for heavy metal was ignited by his cousin's introduction to bands like Metallica, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden. At the age of 10, he began his drumming journey.
Joining Evergrey
After founding Downthrust, Van Dahl caught the attention of session drummer Snowy Shaw, who recommended him for Evergrey. In 2009, Van Dahl replaced Jonas Ekdahl on drums for Evergrey.
The Sabaton Connection
During Shaw's tenure as Sabaton's drummer, Van Dahl served as a drum tech for four shows. After a brief rehearsal at The Abyss, he joined Sabaton as an official member during their Swedish Empire Tour in 2013.
The Heroes Album and Beyond
Sabaton's 2014 album "Heroes" marked Van Dahl's first recording with the band. He has since become an integral part of Sabaton's sound and stage presence.
Personal Life
Hannes Van Dahl is married to Nightwish vocalist Floor Jansen. Their daughter, Freja, was born on March 15, 2017. The birth of their child led Van Dahl to sit out Sabaton's European tour for their album "The Last Stand."
