Early Life and Education

Hans Blix, born in Uppsala, Sweden in 1928, embarked on an illustrious academic career. He studied at Uppsala University and Columbia University, earning a doctorate in international law from Trinity Hall, Cambridge University.

Diplomatic Career

Blix's diplomatic service began in 1962 when he joined the Swedish delegation to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva. From 1961 to 1981, he also served as part of the Swedish delegation to the United Nations.

Minister of Foreign Affairs

In 1978, Blix became the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Sweden. He led the Liberal Party's campaign in the 1980 referendum on nuclear energy, advocating for the continuation of Sweden's nuclear program.

Director General of the IAEA

In 1981, Blix was appointed Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He visited the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant after the 1986 reactor explosion and played a pivotal role in addressing the aftermath of the disaster.

Head of UNMOVIC

In 2000, Blix became the Head of the United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC), responsible for overseeing weapons inspections in Iraq. After failing to find weapons of mass destruction, he resigned in 2003.
