Biography of Harry Pollitt

Harry Pollitt, a prominent English social activist and politician, was born on November 22, 1890, into a working-class family. His father worked as a blacksmith, and Harry was the second of six children.

Political Career

In 1906, Pollitt joined the Independent Labour Party, and in 1912, he became a member of the British Socialist Party. He played a crucial role in organizing the "Hands Off Russia" movement, which aimed to oppose anti-Soviet intervention. Additionally, he was one of the founders of the Communist Party of Great Britain in 1920.

Pollitt's political influence grew over the years. He became a member of the Central Committee and the Political Bureau of the Communist Party in 1922. From 1929 to the 1930s, and again from 1941 to the 1950s, he served as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Great Britain. In 1956, during the suppression of the Hungarian uprising, Pollitt retired from his position as General Secretary, leading to the departure of over 7,000 members from the party. However, he continued to serve as the Chairman of the Party's Executive Committee from the late 1950s to the 1960s.

Pollitt represented the Communist Party of Great Britain at the XIX, XX, and XXI Congresses of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Despite his significant contributions to the party, he did not accept the criticism of Stalin by Khrushchev at the XX Congress.

Legacy

In addition to his political career, Pollitt served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Communist International from 1924 to 1943. On June 27, 1960, while traveling from Australia to the United Kingdom, Pollitt passed away, leaving behind a lasting legacy as a dedicated socialist and advocate for workers' rights.
