Early Life and Education

Mohammad Hassan Akhund was born in Pashmul, Panjwayi District, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. The United Nations has two estimates for his birth year: around 1945-1950 and around 1955-1958.

Taliban Leadership

Akhund was among the founders and leaders of the Taliban movement. He served as the Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of the Taliban-controlled territory in Afghanistan from 1997 to 1999. He also served as the Governor of Kandahar city.

Sanctions and Taliban Regime

In January 2001, Akhund was placed under UN sanctions. He became part of the Taliban's leadership council, the Shura, in 2009 and soon rose to become its leader. He served as a political advisor to Mullah Muhammad Omar, the Taliban leader who died in 2011.

Taliban Takeover and Premiership

In August 2021, as American troops withdrew from Afghanistan, the Taliban launched an offensive and rapidly gained control of the country. On August 15, the Taliban entered Kabul and took over the presidential palace. President Ashraf Ghani fled the country. On September 7, 2021, the Taliban announced the formation of an interim government, with Mohammad Hassan Akhund appointed as the Acting Prime Minister.

Temporary Absence

Abdul Qayyum Zakir temporarily served as Acting Prime Minister from May 17 to July 17, 2023, while Akhund recovered from an illness.
