Childhood and Early Life
Khamzet Magomedovich Sovmen was born on May 1, 1937, in the village of Afipsip, Krasnodar Krai.
Education and Military Service
Sovmen graduated from the Leningrad Mining Institute. Following his military service in the Black Sea Red Banner Fleet, he worked in the Magadan Region, Chukotka, and the Arctic zone of the Krasnoyarsk Krai.
Mining Career
Sovmen mastered various professions, including those of driver, driller, gold prospector, foreman, and engineer. At the age of 29, he was elected chairman of the "Voskhod" gold mining cooperative and later headed the "Soyuz" cooperative, the largest gold mining cooperative in the USSR. Since 1980, he has led the "Polyus" cooperative.
"Polyus" Gold Mining Company
As President of the Closed Joint Stock Company "Polyus" Gold Mining Company, Sovmen oversaw the company's victory in the 2000 competition for the title of "Best Russian Enterprise." "Polyus" became one of the world's top three gold mining companies.
Sovmen played a pivotal role in the development of the Olimpiada gold ore deposit, where a world-renowned mining and processing plant was established. The plant utilizes Russian equipment and environmentally friendly technologies, extracting up to 95% of gold from unprofitable ore in just ten hours. This innovative process has been recognized by the Guinness Book of Records.
Scientific Contributions
Sovmen holds a doctorate and professorship. He is also the author of significant inventions in the gold mining industry.
Political Career
On January 13, 2002, Sovmen was elected President of the Republic of Adygea with 69% of the vote.
Philanthropy and Honors
Sovmen has been involved in charitable activities since 1996. He has received numerous awards, including the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" and the Order "Badge of Honor."
