Heidi Alexander: A Journey from Grassroots to Westminster

Early Life and Education

Heidi Alexander was born in Swindon, England in 1975. She attended Churchfields School and then Gray College, Durham University, where she earned degrees in Geography and European Urban and Regional Development.

Local Government

In 2004, Alexander was elected as a Councilor for Evelyn Ward on the London Borough of Lewisham Council. She subsequently became Deputy Mayor of Lewisham and, in 2006, a member of the Lewisham Cabinet.

Parliamentary Career

In 2009, Alexander stood as the Labour candidate for Lewisham East and won the seat in the 2010 general election. She was re-elected in 2015 and has served on the House of Commons Committee on Communities and Local Government.

Shadow Minister Roles

Alexander initially served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Mary Creagh, Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. She became a Shadow Whip in 2012 and, in December 2013, Shadow Minister for London.

Secretary of State for Health

On September 13, 2015, Alexander was appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Health in Jeremy Corbyn's cabinet. However, she resigned from this role on June 26, 2016, following the Brexit referendum and the resignation of Shadow Foreign Secretary Hilary Benn.

Other Positions

Alexander is a member of the End of Life Choice parliamentary group, which advocates for assisted dying. She has also been a vocal supporter of social justice causes and has worked to help underprivileged people in her community.
